ViStor Virtual
Tape Library
ViStor is a software product that emulates the behavior
of tape libraries and uses disk as its primary storage. Your existing
backup software interacts with ViStor in just the same way as you use a
tape library. ViStor can be configured to emulate several different
tapes drives and libraries ensuring that your backup product will
recognize the device. ViStor can be configured to have many
virtual tape drives. This is ideal when you have several lower
performance data sources but want to get a high aggregate throughput by
having multiple machines backing up to the different ViStor drives.
Instead of using costly Fiber
Channel or SCSI, ViStor uses standard IP networking hardware
leveraging your existing infrastructure. For SAN like
performance, you can use Gigabit Ethernet network at a fraction
of the cost of a Fiber Channel SAN network. This is done through
a protocol called iSCSI. The VTL was designed to using kernel
mode drivers ensuring you will get the optimum performance for
your backups.
