ViStor Why Disk Backup
Traditionally, tapes have been the method of choice for protecting data. But tapes are inherently costly to administer and are prone to failure with regular use. To understand where the strengths and weaknesses of tapes are, we can split the traditional "backup" into two functional categories:
Long term offsite archiving - Long term offsite archiving is and will continue to be served by traditional tape technologies. Tapes can be taken offsite for long periods of time, frequently years.
Regular Backup Cycle - The regular backup cycle is required for all the short term recovery needs. Backups of one form or another are performed on a daily or even hourly basis, and generally account for the majority of wear and tear to the tape hardware and media. These types of backups also have high administration costs.
ViStor is specifically designed to address the Regular Backup Cycle where disk has many benefits over tape, including:
- Increased performance
- Reduced backup and restore times
- Increased reliability
- Decreased administration costs
- Reduced wear and tear on your tape media and hardware
