ViStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL)
ViStor is a software product that emulates the behavior of tape libraries and uses fast disk, such as RAID, as its primary storage. ViStor seamlessly connects with your existing backup software in the same way you connect to a physical tape library. ViStor can be configured to emulate several different tape drives and libraries to ensure that your backup product will recognize the device. You can configure ViStor to have many virtual tape drives, combing numerous streams from slower machines, to numerous virtual drives, and speed up your aggregate performance by a significant factor.
The VTL can also be partitioned to offer multiple libraries. Each VTL library can be configured to have its own tape library type and tape drive type. This allows multiple backup products to each have access to a library within the one VTL.
ViStor gives you the option of using either Fibre Channel or iSCSI, allowing you to leverage your existing infrastructure. ViStor has been architected to give you SAN like performance over gigabit Ethernet and to maximize Fibre Channel throughput speeds through the use of kernel mode drivers.
