Backup and Recovery Software Data Protection with Backup Deduplication

Unified Backup: Because the rest is just "legacy backup"
Cofio AIMstor Backup and Recovery software provides REAL-TIME data protection for Disk to Disk backup, by simplifying and centralizing backup and recovery operations, with zero-wait backup windows. As a next-generation data protection solution, AIMstor automatically provides backup deduplication with a distributed, unified disk repository, or set of repositories that can scale to your needs. Restores are done via a search tool that queries the AIMstor repository for best granularity and performance.
AIMstor's internal Data Change Engine ensures continuous data protection for your data, your virtual environments, and your applications for both physical and virtual machines.
- Backups are getting too big
- Multi-tier Deduplication reduces your Backup size by up to 95% or more.
- Backups are taking too long
- Live Backup snapshots eliminate the Backup window with Byte Change data transfers.
- Backups eat up Bandwidth
- Byte Change data transfers reduce Bandwidth loads by up to 95% or more.
- Restores are painful and slow
- Tag-Store-Index with Browse or Search improves Restore performance by 3X to 100X.
- I need more than just Backup
- AIMstor Unifies Backup / Archive / Replication / CDP and Bare Metal Restore in a single package with a single footprint.
With AIMstor's D2D Backup, you can mix and shares policies and resources with other native AIMstor tools, such as Replication, Continuous Data Protection and Versioning, all at a common code level, for true data protection unification.
AIMstor adaptability makes it the ideal backup and recovery software for a range of environments, from large data centers to remote offices.
The combination of backup and recovery, Backup Deduplication, Replication, Continuous Data Protection and Versioning in a single package with a single footprint provides unprecedented ROI.
- Feature
- Benefit
- Backup Snapshot Performance
- AIMstor provides granular snapshots for fast and intelligent recovery of your data. Snapshots can be real-time capable and save data to the last hour, minute or second.
- Disk-to-Disk Backup
- Maximize backup and restore speed and availability. AIMstor allows you to use your existing disk resources as an intelligent repository for a high performance D2D backup solution.
- Eliminates Backup Windows
- Because data is captured as it changes there are no bulk data transfers or file system scans, and because the backup process causes no overhead to the source machine, there is no longer a requirement for a backup window.
- Eliminates Client Side Overhead
- Unlike traditional backup processes, AIMstor does not scan client or server file systems looking for changed data.
- Byte-Level Change Aware
- Only the data that is changed is transmitted. For instance, if a 10KB email is added to a 3GB PST file, then only the 10KB change to the PST file will be sent. A traditional backup process will first have to scan the whole file system looking for changes and then transmit the entire 3GB PST file.
- Real-Time Data Movement
- Changed byte transfer removes the need for a backup window. Using real time data movement of changed bytes for backup, changed data is moved instantly for backup.
- Reduced Overhead
- Live deduplicated backups vastly reduce CPU, system and network overhead on the source machine. Data is captured incrementally as it is changed or created, then transferred.
- Fast and Efficient Restore
- No layered restore process. Although data is captured byte by byte incrementally, data is indexed so a full image is available, and restored as a single stream equivalent to restoring from a full backup. This provides ultra fast restores, and a consistent point in time backup of the complete dataset.
- Browse Snapshots or Search for Restore
- Online full restores that are already deduplicated and can be browsed are always at hand. All data undergoes Tag-Store-Index process to make it Search-Ready, increases speed for file restore, or file version retrieval by factors of up 100X over legacy products.
- Multi-Tier Backup Deduplication
- Utilizing several backup deduplication schemes, from the point of primary data change awareness, to transfer of data, and post process, AIMstor reduces storage capacity needed many fold. See Data Deduplication for more information.
- Centralizes Backups
- Backup and Recovery to and from multiple nodes, laptops, desktops, file servers and application servers, for all-in-one, high performance, backup.
Combining Source Deduplication and Target Deduplication for Maximum Storage Efficiency
AIMstor is "content aware" of the deduplication that occurs. Legacy backup deduplication solutions typically do not understand the content, and this often creates issues for restore and long term data management.
The AIMstor Unified Repository employs several schemes for optimal de-duplication both within the store, and from the originating primary data source, and makes no distinction between file or email data.
- Duplicate Transfer Avoidance
- During initial synchronization AIMstor intelligently analyzes data and will not transmit any duplicates of data stored.
- Byte Level Change Detection
- Data Change Detection eliminates continuous scans, saving time, performance and capacity hits on all machines. Only changed bytes need to be transferred.
- Multi-Level Single Instance Storage
- AIMstor Unified Repository allows only a single instance of a file, no matter if it is a snapshot, CDP, archive, file or email.
- Post Process Deduplication
- Final step, runs post processing deduplication algorithms within a repository across all data sets from all machines.
AIMstor 4-tier backup deduplication provides the optimum data reduction techniques surpassing every other backup and recovery product. Maximum performance with minimum latency is achieved at every level.

- Repository configuration should plan for 16GB of hard disk space for cache per Source Node. See wiki.cofio.com for further information.
- When more than one configuration is applied to a single node, the higher specification is required.
- Recent updates and patches of OS should be maintained to minimize problems.
- When installing Repository on Win 2008 64-bit, we recommend using Microsoft Dynamic Cache Service called Dynacache, available for free via download at Microsoft.
- Linux supports all Node Types except Replication Node, which will be available in 2011.
- Workstation OS's such as XP and Windows 7 can be used for AIMstor Repository for demo purposes. For production purposes use server based OS's such as Windows 2003, Windows 2008 or Linux. The AIMstor Master can be installed on XP. It can also reside on Vista and Win 7 if the UAC "User Account Control" is turned off.
When more then one configuration is applied to a single node, higher specification may be needed.
